8|01|24 A Multilayered Urban Tree Dataset of Point Clouds, Quantitative Structure and Graph Models

Trees are an integral component in urban green infrastructure and their optimization provides a beneficial dynamic between UGI and the built environment, impacting as well the urban microclimate, building energy consumption, ecosystem services and human well-being. Therefore, the precise inventory of urban trees with high-resolution remote sensing techniques allows for comprehensive urban forestry studies and supports decision-makers in strategic planning processes. This article proposes the use of a graph data structure composed of nodes and edges as a novel approach in tree structure studies, as well as a machine learning prediction model for tree canopy growth based on local environmental factors.

8|12|23 KlimaKübelBäume Research Project

As part of the KlimaKübelBäume (ClimateContainerTrees) research project, 15 trees were excavated from the test area at the greenhouse laboratory centre in Dürnast in order to examine the different root structures of the test trees after 4 vegetation periods of growth.
In the test series, 64 Platanus x hispanica and 64 Tilia cordata were planted in 4 different root space conditions (in the soil, in planters in the soil, in non-insulated planters and in insulated planters). The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of important root space limitation in combination with different irrigation regimes (drought stress/optimally irrigated) and different temperature influences on the root space with regards to tree growth.
The knowledge gained will be incorporated into a guideline for the planning and use of trees in planters in projects without adequate root space.

08|09|23 Film on The Baubotanik Arbor Kitchen Pavilion

This short film explores the design and implementation phases of the Arbor Kitchen Pavilion. In 2012, a grove of 32 London Plane trees was planted in the Neue Kunst am Ried Sculpture Park (Baden-Württemberg, Germany), a space for artists to exhibit work that engages with nature. The trees surround stone tables and an oven for visitors to gather, eat, cook, and discuss. The design task was to create a roof that provides shelter to the tables while allowing the trees to continue to grow. The client wanted the structure to interact with the landscape and to preserve the play of light through the canopy by minimizing the use of technical elements. The Arbor Kitchen uses living trees as the main load-bearing structure. The branches and trunks guide all loads to the ground where the building is anchored solely by roots. The design of Arbor Kitchen is a shingled space-frame roof structure of 57m² with a total weight of only 800kg that is fully supported by the existing trees.

The Arbor Kitchen Pavilion was long-listed for the Small Building Dezeen Awards in 2022.

28|07|23 Final Presentations for Green Technologies - Living Architecture

Shelters can be more than mere functional constructions, they can also be dynamic living structures. During the summer semester 2023, groups of students from the course “Green Technologies - Living Architecture” developed a model for a “Baubotanik shelter”: a living structure with a footprint with a maximum of 6x6m2, supporting a roof made of non-living materials. Students produced wire models of their concepts, accompanied by technical drawings and details, as well as timelines showcasing the hypothetical growth of the structures, which ranged from living pavilions to living bus shelters.

The lecture and seminar series was taught by Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Ludwig and Qiguan Shu.

Thank you to our guest critic Prof. Dr. Pierluigi D’Acunto and to our students for their creative concepts.

17|07|23 ECO+ Final Presentations

During the final presentations of the ECO+ studio project, students presented their concepts for an environmentally-sound neighbourhood in Debring, Franconia (Bavaria). The students worked on creating a comprehensive neighbourhood design by addressing the question: How can urban development be implemented positively according to sociological, ecological, economic and aesthetic aspects with a holistic approach?

The aim of the project was to test a planning method that can be used to design projects with positive influences, while realising a residential area of approximately 3000-5000 m² with 30-65 residential units. The project area is located on a 6,000 m² brownfield and is surrounded by residential buildings (single and multi-family houses).

Thank you to our guest critics Andreas Wittmann, Michael Vollmer, Kathrin Theilig, Nurcan Akca and Kristian Branz, and to the students for their good work all along the semester.

Project supervisors: Ferdinand Ludwig, Christoph Fleckenstein and Kristina Pujkilovic

21|07|23 Co-authored Research Paper on Trees in Planters

"Trees in planters – Growth, structure and ecosystem services of Platanus x hispanica and Tilia cordata and their reaction to soil drought"

Finding the right balance between paved and green spaces in cities is met with challenges, but even more so due to the limited amount of underground space for tree roots. Trees in planters can offer solutions to this obstacle; however, planters bring their own set of challenges for a tree’s growth potential and the resulting provision of ecosystem services. In this paper, research conducted on Platanus x hispanica and Tilia cordata in four different types of growing scenarios reveals key findings as to their impact on the trees and the tree's ability to withstand soil drought.

04|10|22 ECOLOPES TALKS with Chiara Catalano

In the fifth ECOLOPES TALK, Chiara Catalano spoke about the habitat template approach which considers nature as a model for the designing of Urban Green Infrastructure.  The ecological understanding of natural habitats is essential to mimic them in cities and to design niches providing refugia and alternative habitats to certain plant and animal species. The monitoring of urban habitats gives insights on their adaptive dynamics over time and provide for guidelines for new projects and retrofitting of existing greened areas. The design for nature, having a net-positive impact on biodiversity, requires multidisciplinary teams and thinking driven by the analysis of spatially explicit ecological data and supported by integrative and modelling tools.

10|05|21 Arte Xenius: building materials of the future

"So far, the construction industry has mainly used concrete and steel. In order to be able to build more ecologically and sustainably in the future, scientists are looking for alternative building materials. And there are the craziest ideas.

Cardboard, mushrooms or popcorn - nothing is impossible !

In Munich, a visionary architect lets trees grow together in a controlled manner in such a way that load-bearing structures are formed that years later will support bridges or even entire houses."

15|04|21 ECOLOPES ECOlogical building enveLOPES: a game-changing design approach for regenerative urban ecosystems

Our new research project ECOLOPES started recently! With this we embark on a 4 year journey of exploration:

In ECOLOPES we propose a radical change for city development: instead of minimizing the negative impact of urbanisation on nature, we aim at urbanisation to be planned and designed such that nature – including humans – can co-evolve within the city. We envisage a radically new integrated ecosystem approach to architecture that focuses equally on humans, plants, animals, and associated organisms such as microbiota. ECOLOPES will provide the technology that will help to achieve this vision.

18|03|21 The Engineering Club: Evening Talk with Prof. Ferdinand Ludwig and Wilfrid Middelton

The Engineering Club offers a programme of free evening talks on diverse engineering aspects of engineering culture that is open to all.

On Thursday the 8th Prof. Ferdinand Ludwig and PhD student Wilfrid Middelton will talk about Living Structure.

About the topic: Their research is focused on architectural concepts in which plants play a central role. Integrating plants – both functionally and creatively – into construction designs not only provides answers to some of today’s most pressing ecological issues, such as climate change, it also presents a methodological challenge, encouraging exploration into ways of dealing with aspects of growth and decay, chance and probability in architecture and landscape design.

15+16|10|20 Symposium Arbor-Tech

At the online-symposium Arbor-Tech “The Tree between the Cultural Techniques of the Past and Today’s New Technologies”  we will discuss innovative forms of green architecture and green infrastructure that result from an integrated process of "co-design" and "co-evolving" of people, trees, practices and technologies. The starting point are the human-plant-environment interactions of historical or vernacular approaches. The aim is to learn from these examples to develop new concepts and methods.

The event constitutes the 2020 edition of the Weihenstephaner Forum and the fifth edition of the Architecture and Environment (AE) Symposium. It is co-organized by Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Ludwig (TUM Professorship for Green Technologies in Landscape Architecture) and Prof. Dr. Michael Hensel (Research Department for Digital Architecture and Planning, Vienna University of Technology).
