In the context of accelerating climate change, cities have to develop new strategies to adapt and ensure a sustainable quality of life. Nature in cities is a key to ensure this quality of life as it provides cooling, recreation areas, habitat for animals as well as beautiful and enjoyable spaces. Over the recent years, urban planners, architects, and researchers have been working together to move beyond the city-nature dichotomy by placing nature as the core value for a future-oriented urban development. 

This course aims at exploring the core principles of integrating green and blue infrastructures as a baseline for urban planning concepts. The lecture series is carefully designed to address the technological, ecological and social dimensions of blue and green infrastructure, both in theory and practice. Guest speakers from diverse backgrounds will lay the foundation for an understanding of blue and green infrastructure, its dimensions and applications. These lectures will open a discussion on how to integrate natural solutions in early design phases to create lively and resilient urban forms for all living creatures.

The exam of the lecture series will consist of an academic essay where the student will be asked to choose a topic from in the lecture series intersecting social, ecological and technological dimensions, and will further discuss the subject thanks to a project example. In a second examination phase, each student will anonymously review the submission of one of his peers and submit a reflection upon this topic. This reflection paper will allow to evaluate the critical thinking capacity of the student and will not influence the mark of the reviewed paper.

Sustainable Urbanism Extension

The optional seminar (Vertiefung) complementing the lecture series, allows the students to further explore alternative solutions and creative approaches to integrated green infrastructure solutions for a livable urban environment. In the seminar the students working in groups of (3-4 students), will create a joint catalog of urban green infrastructure solutions based on different case studies. This catalog will have a multi-scalar approach addressing urban morphology, service networks and crucial stakeholders.

Sustainable Urbanism 1

Vor dem Hintergrund des Klimawandels müssen Städte neue Strategien entwickeln, um sich anzupassen und eine nachhaltige Lebensqualität zu gewährleisten. Natur in Städten ist ein Schlüssel zur Gewährleistung dieser Lebensqualität, da sie Kühlung, Erholungsgebiete, Lebensraum für Tiere als auch schöne und gern aufgesuchte Räume bietet. In den letzten Jahren haben Stadtplaner:innen, Architekten:innen und Forschende gemeinsam versucht, die Dichotomie von Stadt und Natur zu überwinden, um die Natur als zentralen Wert für eine zukunftsorientierte Stadtentwicklung zu betrachten. 

Dieser Kurs hat zum Ziel, die Kernprinzipien der Integration von grünen und blauen Infrastrukturen als Grundlage für Stadtplanungskonzepte zu erforschen. Die Vorlesungsreihe ist so konzipiert, dass die technologischen, ökologischen und sozialen Dimensionen der blauen und grünen Infrastrukturen sowohl in der Theorie als auch in der Praxis behandelt werden. Gastvortragende aus verschiedenen Fachbereichen werden die Grundlagen für ein Verständnis der blauen und grünen Infrastruktur, ihrer Dimensionen und Anwendungen schaffen. Diese Vorträge eröffnen eine Diskussion darüber, wie natürliche Lösungen in frühe Entwurfsphasen integriert werden können, um lebendige und resiliente städtische Räume für alle Lebewesen zu schaffen.

Die Prüfung der Vorlesungsreihe besteht aus einem akademischen Essay, in dem die Studierenden aufgefordert sind, ein Thema aus der Vorlesungsreihe auszuwählen, das soziale, ökologische und technologische Dimensionen miteinander verbindet, und das Thema anhand eines Projektbeispiels zu vertiefen. In einer zweiten Prüfungsphase wird jeder Studierende anonym einen Beitrag eines seiner Kommiliton:innen überprüfen und eine Reflexion zu diesem Thema einreichen. Dieses Reflexionspapier trainiert die Fähigkeit zum kritischen Denken und hat keinen Einfluss auf die Note der begutachteten Arbeit.

 

Sustainable Urbanism Vertiefung

Das optionale Seminar (Vertiefung), welches die Vorlesungsreihe ergänzt, ermöglicht eine weitere Erforschung alternativer Konzepte und kreativer Ansätze für integrierte grüne Infrastrukturlösungen für eine lebenswerte städtische Umwelt. Im Seminar werden die Studierenden in Gruppen von 3-4 einen gemeinsamen Katalog von grünen Infrastrukturlösungen für Städte erstellen, der sich auf verschiedene Fallstudien bezieht. Dieser Katalog wird einen multiskalaren Ansatz verfolgen, der die städtische Morphologie, Dienstleistungsnetzwerke und wichtige Akteure berücksichtigt.
