Topic: The functional relationships of the knowledge economy on different spatial scales are investigated and the structures of institutional cooperation in the Vienna Metropolitan Region are identified.

Abstract: The growing importance of knowledge-based economic activities - commonly referred to as the knowledge economy - is an important driver of economic and spatial development in metropolitan regions. The systematic use of knowledge in the sense of a combination of scientific and experience-based knowledge in the entrepreneurial value-added process contributes significantly to the reconfiguration of regions. Exchange relationships across several locations have become increasingly diverse and important in recent decades, both within companies and between companies (supplier and sales relationships). The investigation is carried out in the following two steps: Survey and visual presentation of the functional networks of the knowledge economy and analysis of the institutional conditions in the Vienna Metropolitan Region with a network analysis.
