2016-2017 IKEA in Munich: Explorative study for the choice of location

Topic: The explorative location study of the Chair of Spatial Development and the office STUDIO | STADT | REGION shows that the establishment of the Swedish furniture store IKEA in the city centre of cities like Munich offers great opportunities. The results of the study show that IKEA's plans are compatible with the requirements of densely populated cities with a heavy infrastructure burden. Especially in a city like Munich, where residential, commercial and retail space compete for the few remaining spaces, innovative approaches are needed. One possibility, for example, is so-called "mixed-use buildings", i.e. combinations of an IKEA furniture store and residential development, public use or further retail. The study develops three strategic location concepts for an IKEA store in Munich's city centre based on a relational accessibility analysis of the city of Munich: the Paketposthalle, Ratzinger Platz and the unemployment agencies offices on Kapuzinerplatz. Various usage concepts have been implemented at all locations, enabling IKEA to further develop the entire district in cooperation with partners.
