Julian Schäfer (2023). Collage Landscape – Legibility and Development of Public Space in the Texture of Rural and Suburban Settlements and Cultural Landscapes
Open Access

Doctoral degree with honor 'magna cum laude'

Abstract
Urbanist theories on the modern city are centrally focused on the physical-material conditions and qualities of its public space. For suburban and rural settlements and cultural landscapes, there is a lack of a respective investigation of the relation between morphology, texture and sociality of space. Given the insistence on equality of life chances and converging lifestyles everywhere, this work addresses the question of which spatial structures are fundamental here for a cohesive level of everyday open space similar to that of urban public space. The postmodern discourse centered on Colin Rowe, who understood the texture of the traditional European city and its public space as a sustainable model, is transposed to the countryside and the landscape with the help of Rowe’s and Fred Koetter’s 1978 work Collage City, in order to present a new approach to public space here as well. The argumentative structure and cartographic analyses from Collage City are transposed to the rural and suburban context: in analogy to its understanding of urban physical structures, the spatial structures of the cultural landscape are considered as a manifold texture that generates shaped space for public life. As in Collage City, the Nolli plan, the Nuova Pianta di Roma, is reinterpreted here.
Collage Landscape allows landscape architectural as well as urban planning practice in the countryside to make public space the central content even outside the town and city centers. Spatial texture can become the level for linking production, environmental protection, and social qualities within limited land availability. Textural qualities must emerge as the spatial basis of the public sphere in the planning of land uses, infrastructure, and residential or commercial developments in order to qualify the cultural landscape as a free social space for today’s societal demands.
