Tree – Space – Growth

In Baubotanik projects trees become an essential part of our built environment. The aim of this studio is to design tree tops as architectural spaces and to emphasize their aesthetic qualities. The projects should be elaborated in great detail both atmospherically as well as constructively. For this purpose, we will design on the basis of botanical principles and include the dynamic development processes of tree growth as important parameters. The  methodology  and  the  deliverables  are  clearly  defined.  However, the  spatial  programme, the context and the exact functions of the project can be worked out individually. The outline of  the  studio  has  been  adapted  to the current restriction regarding corona virus. The course is organized in form of online teaching. If the restrictions terminate or are loosened, we will switch back to attendance teaching and will adopt the timeline as well as the deliverables.

The studio kickstarts with two exercises to explore the aesthetic and special qualities of tree tops as well as their architectural representation. Based on this individual work we will develop visionary ideas of tree spaces in virtual groups. With the help of methods,we have developed over the past years at our professorship, spatial-aesthetic aspects such as light and shadow effects of various dense treetops will be worked out in order to gradually derive the construction of an initial state and possible development scenarios. We make use of different modelling and visualisation techniques as well as computer-based methods.

The approach combines architectural as well as landscape architecture aspects and is therefore open to students of both disciplines. Working in interdisciplinary groups is encouraged but not mandatory.

The studio is organized in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Michael Hensel, Dr. Defne Sunguroglu Hensel (TU Vienna, Department of Digital Architecture and Planning/OCEAN architecture) and in close collaboration with Ines Dantas (TUM/WUDA/Bartlett UK).

Participation in other courses offered by the Professorship for Green Technologies in Landscape Architecture is strongly recommended. A well-founded examination of the topics of the professorship in previous semesters must be proven.
