Adaption

Adaption is one of the fundamental principles of evolution. Adaption applied to climate responsive building means the development of buildings which are tailored to the respective environment and its daily and seasonal fluctuations. An architect should always include the respective climate and location factors for developing suitable and adaptable buildings. This relates in particular for the interaction of the building form and the building skin with the environmental conditions.

In many cases nature can be used as an inspiring example. By evolution plants and creatures have been adapting to the environmental conditions to survive in a stunning way for thousands of years. The term bionics (biology and technics) defines the adaptation of natures phenomenon to technology.

Task and goal

Task is to design a temporal building that provides public working spaces in the public ground. By adding additional functions the buidling should enhance the public ground even more. The given locations are in climatically different areas. Each group (4 students) has to work on one location and will develop a building which can be used during the whole year and adapt to different outdoor conditions during the day and the year. However, the design proposal must be operated 100% passively (NO heating/cooling/ventilation) but provide power for laptops and artificial light.
